About DART Police

The DART Police force was established in 1989 as part of the transit agency's mission to operate a safe system. DART Police officers are licensed peace officers of the State of Texas who have all the rights, privileges, obligations, and duties of any other peace officer in the state of Texas while on the property under the control of DART or in the actual course and scope of the officer's employment. The law enforcement power granted to DART Police officers is subordinate to the law enforcement power of a municipality in which the power is attempted to be exercised.

What is the Law Enforcement Agency Best Practices Accreditation Program?

The Law Enforcement Accreditation Program is a voluntary process where police agencies in Texas prove their compliance with 170 Texas Law Enforcement Best Practices. These Best Practices were carefully developed by Texas Law Enforcement professionals to assist agencies in the efficient and effective delivery of service, the reduction of risk and the protection of individual's rights. The DART Police Department achieved Recognized status in 2014 and most recently received re-accreditation status in the Spring of 2022.

DART works daily to maintain a safe system. We also know that many customers may want to exercise their right to carry a handgun while on our buses and trains. Consistent with state law, DART has complied with the law that allows open or concealed carry of handguns by persons with a handgun license on DART vehicles and property. Effective September 1, 2021, as approved by the state legislature, any person who is 21 years of age or older and not otherwise prohibited by state or federal law from possessing a firearm is permitted to carry a handgun concealed or open in a holster without a permit.
