15 tons of food
Transit agency employees deliver a train-load of help
Victor Burke, DART Executive Vice President of Operations, presents a check and 15 tons of donated food from transit employees to Bill Thompson, Union Gospel Mission Executive Director. Looking on is DART employee and event chairman David Perry. |

Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) employees collected 31,260 pounds of various food items, or more than 15 tons nonperishable food this year for the Union Gospel Mission of Dallas. Over the past six years, more than 120,000 pounds, or 60 tons, of food has been collected. That's equal to a single DART Rail vehicle or approximately four DART buses.
In addition to food, 'Friendly Food Fight' campaign generated more than $1,000 to feed the hungry in North Texas. Sheltering and serving homeless men and women in Dallas and its surrounding areas since 1949, Union Gospel Mission is completely supported by individual, business and church donations.
